To clean a dirty stem we recommend wrapping a prickly pipe cleaner around a bamboo skewer and soaking it in Isopropyl alcohol.  Wed always clean the outside of the stem first then the inside. This method will clean up a dirty stem in seconds (provided the resin is not caked on, of course).
